John Boner Neighborhood Centers Celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a slew of 70s-themed neighborhood activities throughout the month of October.
This month, the community took time to celebrate the history of John Boner Neighborhood Centers. The original center had humble beginnings, starting with a neighborhood need for a general social-service resource. In the spirit of this neighborhood, neighbors stepped up for their community and met this need head-on. Two neighbors, in particular, rose to the occasion, Richard Moore and John Boner. The two men set up a make-shift office on East 10th Street, and the rest, as they say, is history.
As the needs of our community have evolved, the center, now branded as John Boner Neighborhood Centers, has shifted to meet the needs of the growing community. Regardless, the legacy of community service and asset-based community development that began with John Boner and Richard Moore all those years ago, is still maintained by the current center’s dedicated and selfless staff.
This legacy was celebrated all month long throughout the neighborhood. Festivities included a community scavenger hunt, a neighborhood festival, and a historical project displayed on the windows of the center’s East 10th Street location. All events were themed with 70s inspired accouterments, including 70s-priced hot dogs from Chuck’s Coney Island, and groovy “East Side Vibes” t-shirts.
