Liz Sheldon Named to ACLU of Indiana Board of Directors
We are very proud to announce that the ACLU of Indiana has named Promise Zone Team member Liz Sheldon to its Board of Directors! Liz began serving her three-year term on January 18th. She also serves as the Community & Neighborhood Development Coordinator here at the IEPZ, now in her second year as an AmeriCorps VISTA.
The Board was seeking a young professional with experience in the affordable housing sector, and Liz was honored to be appointed to the role, citing her work in the IEPZ as valuable experience she will bring to the table.
Liz credits retired Board member and mentor John Brandon, former Executive Director of the Marion County Commission on Youth (MCCOY), as a major inspiration for her own tenure with the ACLU of IN. Brandon, she says, has guided her and recommended her for internships in high school and college, including her previous work for the Mayor’s Office.
Now following in his footsteps, Liz is excited to help advance the mission, vision, values, and goals of the ACLU of Indiana, especially pertaining to educating and informing Hoosiers about their rights. She shares the organization’s aims to more clearly define these rights in the law through their work, and to advocate on behalf of those who may not be able to afford or access legal representation.
In her new role, she will help set policy, onboard the new executive director, and manage the organization’s budget and property. Liz brings her expertise in affordable housing programs, policies, and rights, as well as in advocacy and public affairs, to her upcoming work with the ACLU – skills she developed and honed with her work co-chairing the Live IndyEast Committee.
Liz is eager to connect and work with advocates and other professionals over the course of the next three years. She will soon be joining a subcommittee and helping to shape the organization’s forthcoming strategic plan. “The great thing about doing this work in Indiana is that there are a lot of talented and hardworking people here who deserve to be recognized for the contributions they are making,” Liz said. It’s an honor for the IEPZ to count Liz as one of those talented professionals, and we wish her all the best in this new role!
