The United Neighborhood Centers of Indianapolis and United Way of Central IN partnered to relieve debt for individuals living with high poverty (at or below 400% of the federal poverty level) or with a high debt burden (5% or more of their annual income). Their joint donation, in concert with funding from an anonymous donor and from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, went towards the purchase of bulk medical debt at a discount with the organization Undue Medical Debt (formerly RIP Medical Debt).
The debt was subsequently forgiven, helping to relieve the financial burden on these families. In total, this partnership relieved over $239M in medical debt for 112,018 Central Indiana households.
